Street Artist Festival, which will be happening for the 12th time this year from 6 to 9 Semptember, has received the support of the European Comission and officially gained a European status. This traditional, cultural and entertainment manifestation is first of its kind in Serbia and its project has been accepted on a ”European cultural festivals” contest which will be attained through a programme ”Culture 2007-2013”.
For this reason a conference for the media was held today in the Novi Sad City Hall where a programme presentation of the European Comission support for this manifestation as the first and only one in Serbia till now was layed out. The participants of the conference were the deputy mayor of Novi Sad, dr. Siniša Sević, a member of the City Council for Culture, Vladimir Kopicl, and the chairwoman of the Artistic Association ”Inbox” which is in charge of the Street Artist Festival organization, Natali Beljanski.
At the beggining of the manifestation the deputy mayor, dr. Sević, layed stress on the long-standing tradition of the festival which has been gathering respectable street musicians from all over the world and our country, as well as on its humanitarian character this year.
- The City of Novi Sad has been supporting the Street Artist Festival all these years and will continue to do so since we’re trying to keep up with the image of our city as an enviroment of free ideas, creation, creativity, an area open and attractive for tourists and all people of good will – emphasized Sević and stressed the willingness of the city government to maximally support the happening of the festival.
Natali Beljanski presented the European Comission competition results to the press which was highly favourable to the Street Artist Festival and granted it considerable aid and support for further activity.
- In competition with 280 projects on the European Comission contest, the Street Artist Festival has entered the round of 14 chosen ones and received a high project rating of 97,5/100. Accordingly, at the begging of Semptember, over a 100 top street artists will be performing in Novi Sad within a framework of 18 various programmes and troops from Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, England, Italy, France, Greece, Slovenia and Croatia – explained the chairwoman of ”Inbox”.
The European Comission has rated the idea, concept and programme of this year’s and previous year’s festival as high quality with many innovative moments in relation to similar events around the continent. This is primarly related to the openess of the visitors towards participation and the interaction of the artists with them. Likewise, extremly positive was the rating of the organization efforts of this years’s festival in handing it a humanitarian character. It will be seen through the collaboration with the Shelter for children who live/work on the streets of Novi Sad, as well as through the programme dedicated to the marginalized sections of our society, i.e. the Romani community.
- The programmes of the new, broadened conception and the largest edition of the Street Artist Festival until now, will be set up at 10 different locations in the heart of the old town of Novi Sad. Among the total of 150 participants of the programme there will be a large number of street artists from our country, with a last year’s novelty – the Open Scene – intended for the citizens who want to present themselves as scenic artists – added Beljanski at the City Hall conference.
In his first appearance on this function, the member of the City Council for Culture, Vladimir Kopicl, warmly welcomed the occurence of the festival whose concept and programme have been, as he said, justly recognized by the European Commision.
- I’m very-well acquainted with the European programme ”Culture 2007- 2013”. It is extremly demanding, has glowing references and is impossible to carry out without a proper and thorough yearlong preparation. This means that this young team is truly ready to work and make progress. Recognized within European framework and in this form, the Street Artist Festival fits the cultural development plan of Novi Sad up to 2020 perfectly. It is then that we strive to be chosen as the European cultural metropolis. More of these kind of events will strenghten our strivings towards this goal – explained Kopicl and added that the City will henceforth attempt to help the festival in the field of recruiting the support and aid from other social structures and organizations.
The biggest stars of the festival will be an international band ”Playing for Change”. This group – which will be opening the festival on Thursday, 6 Semptember – is part of a USA humanitarian foundation going by the same name which is devoted to the concept of music being a language spoken by all people of the world, regardless of race, national or religious affiliation and carrying a universal message of peace and solidarity.
The Street Artist Festival is organized by the Art Association ”Inbox” from Novi Sad. The sponsor is the City of Novi Sad with the support of the Ministry of Culture (Autonomous Province of Vojvodina), the Tourist organization of Novi Sad and the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development (Republic of Serbia), European Comission and the Embassy of the United States in Beograd.
